About
Ann Bollin is a self-taught ceramicist residing in Naples, Florida, where she works from her home studio. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Central Florida, with a focus on Art Education. With no prior experience in ceramics, she was hired to teach high school ceramics and taught herself the craft in the months leading up to her new position. While she thoroughly enjoyed teaching, her life took a different direction after only two years in the classroom. It wasn’t until 2020, during the “Great Resignation” of the pandemic, that she decided to return to a creative life and became a dedicated full-time artist.
A message from the artist
All of my work is handmade by my two hands, without the use of molds. I work slowly, with intention and attention to detail. I choose this way of making because it helps me feel most connected to my work — to each individual piece. I create one-of-a-kind art objects that will remain in this world for generations to come. There is a permanence to the creation of ceramics that deserves acknowledgment and consideration.
Regarding hoju
I have great respect for the hoju, its meaning, and the culture from which they originate. My values and commitment to my craft are unwavering. I continue to make these jewels because they have played a significant role in my life, serving as a reminder to be present. I cherish them and hold them dear to my heart. My hope is to share their message and purpose, that they may continue to bring joy and good fortune for as long as they exist in this world.
